Simon Kendall Gets a Xmas Present

As the Thai population primarily follows the Buddhist religion, the Christian celebrations of Easter, Christmas etc, are not declared public holidays. That’s not to say the Thais don’t participate and help celebrate these days. Any excuse for a party.

Links Bar decided to make a big Christmas Day for expats, visitors and Thais, by playing our regular golf Monday, followed by a monster smorgasbord style Christmas Lunch/Dinner after the golf, at only 500 bht per head. That’s great!

For that price we had many courses of fine food, followed by some professional entertainers, and, early in the party, some very talented golfers belted out some great songs, including our own Phil Davies. A Welshman who sounds like Tom Jones. Some lair even threw the underwear.

Nick Shaw started it with 3 excellent renditions, followed by Aussie vacationer, Dane O’Brien.  A surprise packet! Maurice commented” he’s done this before”. Excellent show all round.

Perhaps playing golf on Christmas Day is a novelty for most, as the names just kept coming, until we had 40 nominations. This to a course that some don’t particularly like, for their own reasons.

After 4 no shows, 36 happy golfers, in 3 buses and some cars, all got to the course early.

The starter sent the first of our 9 groups away 10 minutes early and we had a smooth, albiet a little slow, run with no other Bars or Societies in sight.

This many players, we had enough to do three flights, 4 near pins and Best Nines.

Winner of “A”  flight  (0-13) and overall best score went to visitor, Simon Kendall, the only one to better his handicap. On a course that takes no prisoners, his 37 points was 4 points better than any other player.

Tommy Marshall scraped together 31 pts for second, just holding out the consistent Colin Smith on 30 points.

Martin Patch has just returned for another visit. His first game with us this trip yielded him 33 points for a 3rd place. Ironically, he again scored 33 points at Treasure Hill, and this time he won “B” flight (14-21).

Niall Caven has been here a few weeks and seems to be mentioned often in the results. His 30 points were enough to take second spot ahead of a surprised Ian Pickles. He never thought 27 points would get anywhere.. but it did.

Ready to give up golf after some mediocre scores recently, John Anderson looks forward to playing at Treasure Hill. Almost like a home course, he is almost always in the money here, and once again threw off the shackles for a winning 33 points in “C” flight (22 +).

Second Place of 29 points was taken by our only Lady golfer in the field, Helene Lindberg, finishing just  in front of Rod Stevens with 28 points.

4 near pins out again today, and all were won. We can’t tell you who won which holes because somebody didn’t number them. We are very grateful that they were out there.

Nearest the Pins were: ..John Doyle, Paul Smith, Barry Wellings  and Martin Patch, who they tell me was very close to an ace.

A busy Motorway on the trip back, but all arrived in time for the Presentations by Tom (sorry) Phil. Except for Ian Pickles, but he eventually arrived.

Phil, Maurice and the girls threw open the lids on the trays of delicious food and called” Foods Up”

This was just a great way for so many to have a Merry Christmas in Pattaya, Thailand.
