Tight Finish at Stormy Phoenix
Phoenix was the winner when Pattaya CC decided to ask an extortionate high season fee thus obliging the Pattaya Links Golf Society to redirect there on Friday, 10th November to play a stableford competition on the Mountain and quirky Lakes nines, in two flights with the cut at an unusually high 20.
The course was in good condition with grassed fairways and steady greens but the peculiarly overfilled soft bunkers still pose problems. A bright warm day soon turned into a stormy one and the clubhouse siren summoned golfers off the course for almost an hour after nine holes. This had obvious effects on the scores and also saw a fifth of the field withdraw for an early shower.
In the top flight new member Paul Chesney put his debut round horrors behind him and won a countback for third place with 31 points, his playing partner Mike Davies going one better for second with 32 points. The winner was golf’s fashion guru Walter Baechli with a fine 36 points. In the second flight tight scores saw Ken Hole take third place with 35 points, one behind Mike Jeffreys on 36 points and the countback winner Peter Henshaw. Consolation winners were Phil Davies (best front nine with 18 points) and Terry Mangan’s excellent back nine of nineteen points. The wig was awarded to Mav Lawless, not for his card but for reasons concerning a recent experience in a barber’s chair! Where do you get them from Phil?
