Slick Greens No Fear for Peter WilsonPattavia Century, we have found, in recent times, to be in excellent condition, with nicely mown fairways and rough not too rough, even the Clubhouse deserves a mention. During a couple of our prior visits we found, and reported, that the greens were being worked on and were much slower than we had been used to. So, when three people from three different golf groups told us that they were back to their slick, tricky best, with the warning that “ leave it above the pin, expect a three putt at best”, it was with some trepidation that twenty golfers made the trek up the 331. Weather was fine with a nice breeze all day. In fact quite strong at times, which made for a pleasant day out. So with the course playing well and the greens quick, even though lightly sanded, we expected the scoring to on the low side, especially after Treasure Hill, when nobody got even close to handicap. Many players proved that assumption to be well wide of the mark, none more so than Peter Wilson, who, apparently, had no fear of the greens, scoring a terrific 41 points to be the number one player in “A” flight. Even better is the fact that Peter is a playing off a handicap of 8. Do the maths, that’s 75 gross.. “A” flight second placegetter, Bob Watson scored 38 points, 74 gross from handicap 4. Two top golfers showing great form. James Hudson, handicap 5, scored just 30 points for third spot. He’ll take it, but, of course could have been more, as he was playing the course for the first time. In the “B” flight, Tony O’Neill made an impressive 39 points to nudge out Paul Chesney on countback. Paul very happy to return to form. Third spot went to Mike Wilsher, a player who can run hot or cold. Today was on the warm side with 36 points, a very good effort. Our newest “Golfer of the Month”, Tony Browne, also scored 36 points, but missed a place by way of the countback. We tried to get more winners by having near pin markers on each of the Par 3s. However, only two were claimed. Selwyn Yates on the 4th and Paul Chesney on the 13th.
Two more prizes to go, those being Best Nines.
