Johnno Wears The Green JacketAfter dispersing everyone into cars and a bus, 18 players made the journey up the 331 to Greenwood Golf Course for the second time in three weeks. This is not a bad thing, as this course is always in very good condition, although a tad more expensive this time as “high season” pricing kicks in. Some say it seems always wet, even during the “Dry’, but today we had good run with just the odd wet patch, and of course, wet around the front of the greens. The greens on “A” course were running quickly, but the “B” course had been recently cored and sanded, so we needed to adjust our putting to the slower speed. Weather was fine, getting a little hotter as the day wore on, and to our surprise a sprinkling of raindrops as our group reached the final green. But, as the first group out, a 3 ball, we once again had “millionaires” golf. In fact, so clear was it ahead of us, we finished our round in a leisurely 3hrs 15 minutes. Although fun, getting to wear the “wig” for having the least flattering score of the day, is not something to aim for. BUT, what an incentive to do better. Even Bob Watson swore he would never again. So, after more than enough of “wigs” John Anderson turned the tables today to take out the overall first place with a handicap beating 39 points, and a try on of the Green Jacket. John Mason came second, lamenting the shots that got away, but a fine 38 points to his score card. Tony Browne, fresh from a fourth place in the Poppy Day Golf, (partnered with John Anderson) came into third place here with another good score of 37 points, while John Pierrel won a countback for fourth, beating unlucky John Harrison, both with 36 points.
We placed near pin markers on each of the par 3s, but, due to some contoversy and great debate, this scribe does not know the final results.
We do know, however, the Best Nine Winners.
Best Front Nine ( non winners)…..Rod Stevens..16 pts Best Back Nine (non winners)….. Mike Firkin…20 pts
Winner……..John Anderson (30)…………39 pts 2nd Place……John Mason (26)……………..38 pts 3rd Place……Tony Browne (21)……………..37 pts. 4th Place……John Pierrel (12)……………….36 pts c/back
The chicken and chips were followed by presentations by Phil, who was looking for the next future green jacket wearer, who first must wear the “wig”. Bryan Barrell is having another try out, to ensure he’s ready for the Jacket.
