King Kevin Rules at Burapha
Pattaya golf is essentially about friendship, above all else and when the opportunity arises to share a golf day with a neighbouring venue it cannot be resisted, Such it was on Wednesday, 6th September when the golfers of Coiln’s Bar in Soi Buakhao accepted an invitation to join the PLGS at the Links to enjoy a day at Burapha on the sumptuous A and B nines. The format was stableford and the large field was divided into two flights with the cut coming at 20 and under. Other old friends also joined, including Dave Stockman, a former PGS and IPGC Champion, who is continuing his recovery from a serious health issue and he showed the field he had not lost much of his skill. Despite the rains of late, and rain towards the end of the round the course was in immaculate condition with lush fairways and very consistent greens. Bunkers were good and well raked and only the thick rough posed problems to the golfers, making rescue shots a stern test of contact and accuracy. In the second flight scores were moderate with Barry Oats losing on countback to take fourth place on 30 points, just edged out by fellow Aussie Ed Mason also on thirty. In second was Bruce Walters with 33 points. The flight was won by Frank Riley with 34 points. In the top flight Paul Smith recorded the day’s best gross with 75, giving him 37 points for fourth place, losing on countback for third to Tip Briney who had accidentally signed for a lower handicap, thus placing him in the top flight! Second place was held by Dave Stockman with 39 points but the victor with all the plaudits was Kevin Rogers whose splendid 41 points came from his handicap of twelve. Consolation prizes saw John Pierrel win the best front nine with 18 points and Derek Phillips take the back nine prize with the same score. A full presentation back at the Links saw Keith Boxshall again presented with the dreaded Wig for his mediocre performance but he still has a couple of rounds to go to challenge the legendary “Billy the Wig”, Scotsman Billy Hill for the record! Days like this are always memorable and the company of friends more than compensates for some inevitable indifferent golf. Well done lads and thanks for the day.
