Cobban and Roberts: A Tight Finish
Could it be that the rainy days are behind us? That’s how it felt as 28 players made their way by buses and cars to the beautiful Royal Lakeside Golf Course on this Monday morning. Rolling up to the front of the magnificent club house is a treat, but having some putts on the big practice green is almost worth the price of admission, and then there is the course. We are rarely disappointed in the condition and presentation of this course. No matter how picky they were, all agreed that it was too hard to find any faults at all. Fairways with a good covering of grass, bunkers well kept, and greens with some speed, which is what we expect here. A few sprinkles of sand on some had no effect on the roll of the ball. Royal Lakeside and it’s neighbor, Bangpakong, usually produce some good scoring, and this day it was Les Cobban with 42 points just pipping Maurice Roberts on 41 points to take out “A” flight. That’s great scoring. At his first outing with Links, Germany’s Julian Preisinger, playing off handicap 4, scored 38 points to take third spot, followed by a couple of near pins. Big day out. “B” flight saw Colin Service returning to the winner’s circle after a few disappointments, beating Ray Cody on countback, both with handicap equalling rounds of 36 points. Paul Chesney is running hot and cold at the moment, but a hot one today had him come in with 35 points to get third on countback over Mike Tottenham. Near Pins were won by: Julian Preisinger (3+12), Tip Briney (6), Ed Wykoff (15)

Matt Cronin is not a lightweight, so when he was seen lying on the sand by a lagoon, 3 caddies and a golfer went to help him up. And then, the story goes, he blamed his 150 cm, 40 kg female caddie for pushing him over. Maurice had no hesitation in having Matt don the “silly hat”. In a first, we believe, and a surprise, Larry Slattery had the least impressive score for the day and wore the “wig”. Les Cobban didn’t get back to the bar, so Maurice decided he would have the Green Jacket, why not? 41 points is good. The Golfer’s meal of pasta demolished, presentations done, a farewell to Chris Barker, and all got away before dark, well nearly all.
