Greg Smith Wins His First Green Jacket

It was a warm Monday morning when our twenty-one golfers arrived at the beautiful Laem Chabang Golf Club, and it stayed quite warm to hot most of the round.

The course, as always here, was in excellent condition. The main point made was that the C nine greens were a little slower than the B nine. The C course is scheduled for closure and renovation in the next couple of weeks, so maybe the sanding of these greens is the first step.

Perhaps due to the weather and sanding, or just one of those days, scoring was not into the 40 points area as has been the case recently here.

Nevertheless it was a close run race at the top with a countback needed to decide first place. Greg Smith and Kevin LaBar both had 36 points, but it was Greg who prevailed to take the win and wear the Green Jacket for his first time.

Then another countback was needed to separate Nils-Peter Kristensen and Maurice Roberts who had each scored 34 points. It was Nils-Peter once again in the top finishers beating Maurice who was playing his second round since a month away in Australia.

Near Pins: Kevin Rogers, Chris Barker, Paul Smith x 2 ( Yes, someone forgot to number them).

 Winners at Laem Chabang

2nd Place –  Kevin LaBar (12) – 36 pts

3rd Place –  Nils-Peter Kristensen (19) – 34 pts c/back

4th Place –  Maurice Roberts (12) – 34 pts

Best Back Nine ( non winners) –  Bill Copeland – 18 pts c/back

I know golf can be frustrating, as per my form, but spare a thought for Derek Phillips. Seventeen days ago he was basking in the glory of scoring 43 points at Pattana. Today he didn’t quite manage 20 points. Wearing the “wig” will no doubt inspire a return to the top.

Toby Glass had a rare off day to score just 8 points on one of the nines to get the “silly hat”.

The forward planning of Management and Greenkeeper keeps this course in immaculate condition and a pleasure to play here. We still have some more visits while our special pricing is in effect. Check us out at the website.
