Kidd’s Play at Eastern Star
The current sports day package at Eastern Star drew twenty-four Pattaya Links golfers to Ban Chang on the final day of July, to play a stableford competition in a single flight on a course which was reasonably presented, with tight lies on the fairways, some punitive rough and fairly consistent greens running at a good pace.
The day remained mostly overcast meaning lower temperatures which made the conditions more comfortable for the golfers.
The single flight saw scores which were not exceptional, as usual at the course, but nevertheless there was more than a competitive edge to the day.
Phil Davies held down fifth place with 33 points, losing on countback to playing partner Paul Smith whose 33 points represented the best gross of the day, 78.
Wiley old Tip Briney enjoyed a third place finish with 36 points, losing on countback to runner-up Toby Glass. It was Tip’s penultimate round before taking a break in Egypt – plenty of sand there Tip!
The honours on the day went to Stuart Kidd who played some solid golf with the day’s only sub-par round of thirty-seven points, achieved by virtue of a monstrous twenty-footer on the eighteenth.
Near pins went to Paul Smith (3), Tip Briney (6) and Toby Glass (17) leaving the thirteenth green unsullied by two dozen 165 yard tee shots.
The best front nine award went to Aussie Geoff Wallace (18 points) whilst compatriot Ian Fraser took the best back nine award with 18 points after countback.
In welcoming Rob Morrison to his first round with the group Mr. Phil referred to Rob finishing his round early because his caddy was suffering from an ant in her ear. Chivalrous Rob made arrangements to find help for the unfortunate lady and his early finish saw him rewarded with the “silly hat”.
That was a bit tough Phil, after all Rob was looking after a sickly ant.
Finally, the wig went to Ray Byron for the day’s low score and there was a beaming smile, as always, underneath the monstrous appendage.
Eastern Star had come up trumps again for the final July PLGS golf round.
