Phil Still on A High

Bangpakong Riverside Golf Club welcomed the Pattaya Links Golf Society on Monday, 18th March when the group arrived to play a stableford competition in two flights, divided at eighteen and under.

The weather was hot and, surprisingly for the course, the day started off still and very humid. The wind was to get up on the back nine however, and would cause problems, swirling around the flat riverside track.

Conditions kept scores at a moderate level, with one exception, as did the fairways which were soft and the greens were more grainy than usual.

In the second flight third place went to the elder statesman Barry Oats who finished on 35 points, one behind the leaders who were subjected to countback to decide the winner.

John Chelo’s smile was broad as it was announced he had nudged Richard Dobson into second place.

In the top flight third place went to Chris Barker on countback with 37 points, Stu Thompson being the unlucky golfer to lose out. Derek Phillips took second with 38 points and Phil Davies was still on a “high” after the weekend which saw his beloved Wales win the Grand Slam in rugby on Saturday. He powered his way to forty-two points with very few putts, nailing everything within six to eight feet.

Near pins went to Barry Horman (4), Darren Beavers (7), Pete Seil (13) and Richard Dobson (16).

The best front nine (non winners) was recorded by Stu Thompson (19 points) and Connie Walsh took the award for the best back nine (non winners) with 20 points.

At the other end of the leaderboard Barry Horman wore the “wig” yet again, a fine way to finish his stay, whilst a measly nine points on the back nine gave Masa Sugaya the “silly hat” award.

The presentation ended with brandy all round as Dave Heyes celebrated his birthday in a most generous fashion and even the day’s hero Mr Phil could not resist the spirit of the occasion as he indulged for a very rare time. It had been a magical couple of days for the winner of the Green Jacket.
