It’s fair to say that Mountain Shadow is not everyone’s favourite golf course, with its low hanging trees, punitive rough, water hazards, hard bunkers and undulating greens. It is undoubtedly a challenge to the average golfer. However the Pattaya Links Golf Society put together a good field for its December opener and received the usual warm welcome.

The field wad divided into two flights at 18 and under and play got underway early. But for the second successive round progress was stuttering, as another Pattaya group slowly picked their way around the course ahead of the PLGS field.

Scores were moderate in the humid conditions and in the top  flight Ken Page’s 31 points took third place on countback from Mick Alleyne and the returning Welshman Colin Smith. In second place was Dave Heyes, playing his final round this trip and only a missed short putt on the eighteenth denied him the victory. Instead it went to Bill Stewart, also on 33 points.

The second flight fared better with Merle Humphreys firing 35 points for third, behind Tim Shaw (36 points) and Stu Thompson who won on countback. It was Stu’s debut “green jacket” and it is gratifying to see that his game is bearing up well after the trauma of a few years ago when all hopes of him continuing the game he loves seemed lost.
