Peter Wilson Piles On PointsThere was a definite change in the air as we gathered at Links Bar ready for the challenge at Crystal Bay. Humidity had dropped, there was a strong breeze and clear skies, maybe the start of the “Dry’ season. After making life somewhat harder for some, playing the long tees at Khao Kheow, we decided to give everyone a break and play from the very short yellow tees at The Bay. Most were happy about that.. But of course there is always one/some who are not happy playing short tees. What did Abe Lincoln say about “pleasing the people”? So, after a couple of late withdrawls, 18 players gathered at the C 1 tee for a start, slightly earlier than scheduled. Our first group, a three ball, moved along nicely and soon opened up a gap to the second group, as they should. What made that easier was that the group ahead, not ours, made very good headway so that we were never held up. Crystal Bay has had some criticism over the past couple of years, and sometimes deservedly, but today was certainly worthy of praise. This course was as good as many of us can remember. A combination of good rain and, it seems, a good maintainance program. Fairways were cut nicely, the odd bare patch, but nothing to worry over. The greens were as good and played well, not as quick as some other courses, but fair for all and running true. Only a few days ago at Khao Kheow, Peter Wilson scored an impressive 36 points to win the Green Jacket. Today he carried on with that form to go 6 points better, with a splendid 42 points to again win “A” flight. 40 points would often be a winning score, but fly in, fly out visitor, Anthony Woodman had to settle for second place, while Barry Moore, here for holidays took third spot with 36 points. Alistair Gall is usually never far away from the podium and went to the top of “B” flight with a very handy 37 points. Tony Browne has continued his good form and ran a close second with his 36 points, and John Mason was surprised at his third placing, which he achieved by beating Larry Slattery on countback. After sorting the winners, we now have consolation prizes for the best nine. Best Front Nine ( non winners)…Alan Smith..19 pts Best Back Nine ( non winners)…Steve Potter..19 pts c/back.
Winner..”A” flight…….Peter Wilson (9)………………..42pts 2nd Place…………………… Anthony Woodman (11)……….40 pts 3rd Place………………..Barry Moore (16)………………36 pts.
Winner “B” flight……….Alistair Gall (18)……………….37pts 2nd Place…………………Tony Browne (21)…………….36 pts 3rd Place………………….John Mason (26)………………34 pts c/back
With Phil not yet returned from the “Tour” game, and time moving along, the Presentation duties fell to Len Jones, back in his “old role”. He hasn’t forgotten how. Peter Wilson once again posed for the camera in a nice Green Jacket. At a more than reasonable price and now a good presentation, Crystal Bay needs to be on the program for any golfer.
