Tony Browne On Fire At Bangpra
Don’t let anyone tell you Bangpra is an easy Golf Course. It is not.. On what seems a rare visit here we found the course to be in very good condition, and just as challenging as ever. The fairways were freshly mown and firm, while the light rough posed few problems. The deeper rough, however, was more difficult and even the eventual “A” flight winner, Maurice Roberts, told of his adventures at trying to get it back on the fairway. As reported by another Society recently, the greens are still much slower than those who have played here over the years have experienced. Today, mostly medium pace, but some greens were quicker than that and caught out more than a few. Weather was mostly overcast, but quite hot as there was little breeze and none of the rain we saw on the windscreen on the way to the course. Of the 21 starters today, only four of them managed to play to handicap or better. The two outstanding scores came from Tony Browne winning the “B” flight with a well compiled 40 points. Tony is in red hot form right now, and enjoying every minute of it. Bob Fagan, after a somewhat low key score at his first outing with Links a week ago, came back to show his real form, I think, with 34 points to get second, while John Mason was surprised to make third with only 29 points. But they all count. Maurice Roberts will tell you his form is all over the place, but today was “steady as she goes” amassing 38 points to take out first spot in the “A” flight. Second Place in “A” flight is worth a mention. Mike Allidi, handicap 3, scored 36 points, gross 75. Well done on a tough track. Huw Phillips did well to also have 36 points, only to beaten on countback by Mike. After paying two flights and three places in each, it was the time for Best Nines.
Best Front Nine ( non winners)…..Phil Davies…..18 pts Best Back Nine (non winners)….. Peter Wilson….18 pts
Winner..”A” Flight…..Maurice Roberts (11)………..38 pts 2nd Place………………Mike Allidi (3)…………………36 pts c/back 3rd Place………………Huw Phillips (13)…………..36 pts.
Winner..”B” Flight……Tony Browne (21)………….40 pts 2nd Place……………….Bob Fagan (22)……………..34 pts 3rd Place………………..John Mason (25)……………29 pts.
Due to the later tee time, it was getting late as the food and presentations took place nearing dark. Tony had plenty of room in the “one size fits all” Green Jacket . Guy Stewart is having a big loss of form for now. Having won the “wig”, a reversal is now on the cards, right Guy?
